Summer Slide Crafts

School is out, and summer is in session! When the excitement over escaping the classroom eventually wears down, it is only a matter of time before we start to hear the dreaded phrase “I’m bored” as the infamous summer slide commences. Creativity for Kids® is here to help. With homework out of the way for the next couple of months, we came up with Top 10 Ideas to Foster Your Child’s Creativity and Imagination During the Summer!

1. Grow a Garden and Keep a Garden Journal

Do you have a green thumb? Get your children involved by creating a garden growth journal. Have them work beside you as you garden, keeping track of the growth of their plants throughout the summer by drawing pictures. If you are feeling extra creative, your children can create their own plant labels to truly make the garden their own.

Magic Bean Growing

Not much of a gardener yourself? Have your children grow their own habitat with Creativity for Kids Grow N’ Glow Terrarium! This kit allows you to craft, plant, water, and grow your own terrarium tabletop garden.

2. Take in the Scenery

Taking your children to the park or the beach is an experience on its own. Bring a coloring pad and their favorite coloring utensils, and a casual day can turn into an artistic adventure! Your children can draw the scenery all while increasing their interest of nature and capturing their personal experience through art. This is also a great way for your children to capture their summer memories.

3. Fourth of July Splatter Paint

Get in the American spirit for the Fourth of July by decorating their own firework t-shirts! Create a firework affect by splatter painting the t-shirts. Designer “Paging Supermom” gives us the perfect inspiration on how to go about designing their shirts and what tools to use successfully with acrylic paint.

4. Fish in a Bag Slime

For decades slime has been a staple in children’s entertainment. Lucky for us, creating slime is an easy at-home activity! Give it a summer spin by creating Fish in a Bag Slime, an idea we found from DIY and crafting blogger “My Frugal Adventures”. Your brief supply list includes: plastic fish, liquid starch, Elmer’s Glue, treat bags, and ribbon. For full directions visit “My Frugal Adventures.”

5. Make Your Creativity Can and Go See Toy Story 4

Hitting theaters this summer, Toy Story 4 brings back the classic gang along with a new toy named Forky; created by Andy’s little sister Bonnie. Before taking you family to see the new movie, get in the spirit by creating your own toy with Creativity for Kids The BIG Creativity Can; a big can filled with colorful craft materials that stimulate kids to use their imaginations to create whatever they like.

7. Go Fossil Hunting

Bring out your children’s inner paleontologist with fossil hunting. If you are lucky enough to live near a fossil park, this is a great way to get them out of the house and exploring. If not, don’t worry, former teacher “Fun Learning for Kids” provides us with a great way to create our own fossil hunt. All you will need is cornstarch, water, dinosaur toys, and an imagination. This is a great way to not only spark the imagination of your children but also work in a science lesson in the process! To see full directions head to “Fun Learning for Kids.”

8. Create Your Own Water Bottle

With summer sports and activities going on, your children need to stay hydrated. Make drinking water more creative than a chore by letting your children personalize their own water bottle! Duct tape, stickers, or paint all are great tools for your children to customize their water bottle.

9. Make Your Driveway a Canvas

Chalk art has been a popular activity amongst children for years and it’s easy to see why. Giving your child full freedom to color an entire driveway will let their creativity flow on a larger scale. Turn their chalk drawing into classic games such as hopscotch or four-square or challenge them to draw their favorite animal or summer memory. There are endless possibilities on what they can create!

10. Make Your Backyard the Beach

Can’t make it to the beach this summer? Bring the ocean to you with beach-themed arts and crafts! There are many different activities you can do, some of our favorites being: painting seashells, using our Mermaid Tail Jewelry Maker, or creating your own ocean themed handprint craft. We are inspired by the ocean themed handprint craft provided by graphic designer and craft blogger “i heart arts n crafts.” All you really need is paint, a surface to create on, and their hands! For full inspiration visit “i heart arts n crafts.”
